Plot: In this suspense thriller, a man discovers the unexpected danger of trusting a good Samaritan. Jeff Taylor (Kurt Russell) and his wife Amy (Kathleen Quinlan) are driving through the New Mexico desert en route to California when an incident with a lunatic driver causes their jeep to break down in the middle of nowhere. Jeff is trying to fix the vehicle when an apparently friendly truck driver, Red Barr (J.T. Walsh), stops by to offer help. Red tells the couple that there's a diner a few miles down the road where they can call for help; Jeff decides to stay with the car while Amy hops a ride with Red to see if she can find a mechanic to help them. After a long wait, Jeff is able to get the jeep running again, and he discovers that the diner is indeed a few miles down the road. But everyone there claims they've seen no sign of Amy, and Red claims to know nothing about picking her up. When Jeff attempts to file a missing person's report, he discovers mysterious disappearances are disturbingly common in this stretch of the desert; he soon realizes that someone has kidnapped his wife, but he's not sure who, or for what purpose. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Terrifyingly intense!
Added 10/16/2009

This is one of those action thrillers that goes perfect with popcorn or chips or whatever. It's really intense. As a growing fan of political thrillers, this gets even better after repeated viewings. With action, drama, humor, and of course, thrills, this should be watched by those who are into these sorts of movies. And for those who want to see Steven Segal killed off in the film, then this is your first, and probably only, chance.

No Seagal ,No Problem
Added 7/24/2008

This is a very ironic movie, it came out only 5 years before the 9/11 attacks. its plot is very similar in a way to what happened on that day, or what could have been done to prevent the incident. Sure enough the movie is fiction, most of what is seen would work up to a certain point. Either way the movie is a great effort at demonstrating what could be done in a time of crisis.

A commercial airline is taken over by Islamic extremist; the main terrorist is Nagi Hassan, at first it seem that his demands is that the U.S. must release a man named Jaffa or they will suffer the consequences. But an analyst named Dr. Grant (Kurt Russell) believes different, his belief is that Hassan doesn't really want Jaffa's release; instead Grant believes the plane is carrying DZ-5 (an extremely dangerous explosive) and that he will detonate the plane killing millions of Americans.

Grant, Colonel Travis (Steven Seagal) and a group of trained soldiers are planning now to take control of the plane with a special stealth plane that can attach to its commercial airliner. At first when I heard there plan it didn't feel realistic, but they do it just right, making it quite believable.

For Seagal fans like me, let me tell you that this is not a Seagal movie. This is a Kurt Russell movie. Seagal is in the movie for tops 20 minutes. It seems that Seagal had some issues with the producers and his role was minimized. Funny though you can tell in some instances that Seagal doesn't want to be in it; he does give a good supporting role but we have seen better. Anyhow the movie is fantastic, a bit dated in some areas, but overall good. The major problem I have is with the DVD, it's horrible, the picture quality is crappy; Warner needs to re-release this remastered

MY PERSONAL RATING: 4 OUT OF 5

Interesting Action movie without the leading action star
Added 11/20/2007

This was a good movie and Kurt Russell did a great job in his role. I was disappointed that Steven Seagal was killed about 20 minutes into the movie, but if he hadn't, the movie would have been over in another 20 minutes as he would have retaken the plane in no time, all the bad guys were weak in comparison.

This was the most realistic depliction of trying to board an in-flight hijacked plane I have ever seen, it's not something and just sky-diving onto a plane. The truth is you would probably kill everyone on board trying.

The terrorist were just a bit too sophisticated for real life though. Come on, who creates a bomb that is too difficult to disarm on a plane where you are very unlikely to find a bomb squad around.

Good movie, great to watch once, but not worth the space in the library.

Too bad picture quality suffers
Added 8/11/2007

I have seen this movie many times on tv and never tire of it. So recently I decided to add the dvd to my collection. I was VERY disappointed in the picture quality. Not at all sharp, even on my PC screen. This DVD release is 10 yrs old so hopefully it will be re released in some sort of special edition with the quality the way it should be.

Fine thriller with believable plot twists, exciting climax

BREAKDOWN

(USA - 1997)

Aspect ratio: 2.39:1 (Super 35)
Theatrical soundtrack: Dolby Digital

After their car breaks down in open country, a married couple (Kurt Russell and Kathleen Quinlan) are pitched into mortal danger when Quinlan disappears after accepting help from a sinister trucker (J.T. Walsh).

Well-scripted thriller, in which Russell and Quinlan become entangled in a ghoulish extortion plot after falling prey to some less than savory characters (I'll say no more). Believable plot twists lead to a dynamic climax which should have most viewers rivetted to their seats, and which probably accounted for director Jonathan Mostow being hired to direct TERMINATOR 3: RISE OF THE MACHINES (2003). Tense, exciting stuff, worth a look.

watch out!
Added 9/20/2009

Don't watch this movie before you are leaving on vacation, it might make you turn around! Kurt Russel nails his part of being a "Normal guy" facing the bad guys. He reacts like you or I might in a the same situation. All he wants is to get out of this place with his wife. I won't tell you how it ends, you'll have to find that out for yourself....

Great film, Great cast
Added 9/12/2009

This is one of my favorite flicks. Kurt Russell is one of a kind. One of the few child actors who kept his career going after he grew past the the cute child star, teen idol, and mature star mold. Non stop suspense. Action for everyone. And wonderful support from The supporting cast. Most especially, the late, great J.T Walsh. The DVD is first rate. Excellent transfer, and imaging. The film echos of Hitchcock. And the location scenes are breathtaking. Highly reccomended.
