Plot: Two bands of warriors, one good and one evil, battle to keep the peace in Moscow in this cat's cradle thriller from Russia. In 1342, the Warriors of Light (led by Gesser, Lord of Light) and the Warriors of Darkness (led by Zavulon, General of Darkness) declare a truce under which each side will form a law enforcement team to monitor the other side's activities. The Warriors of Light, who enforce the powers of good, patrol the Night Watch, while the Warriors of Darkness, who openly embrace evil, staff the Day Watch. Each watch group also contains Others, mortals with supernatural powers from both sides that include vampires, shapeshifters, witches, and the like. Prophecy suggests that one day, a Great One will surface and permanently extinguish the threat of an apocalyptic war between the two sides by upsetting the balance, lending greater power to either good or evil (depending on his or her choice) and thus determining the future of mankind forever. In 1992, Night Watch member and Warrior of Light Anton Gordesky (Konstantin Khabensky) discovers he's an other amid a sting on a witch. Cut to twelve years later. In 2004, Anton still works the Night Watch, but now he's a vampiric warrior who drinks blood. One night, while on patrol, he rescues a young boy named Egor (Dima Martinov) from a handful of Dark Warriors, but in the process, he encounters Svetlana (Maria Poroshina), a woman who acts as a funnel -- a conduit for the powers of evil. Anton reflects on the prophecy regarding The Great One, and begins to suspect that Svetlana and Egor may be harbingers of this fateful event. As the first installment in a Russian trilogy, Night Watch (aka Nochnoj Dozor) was a massive box-office success in its native Russia, and is followed by the second installment, Day Watch; it was released in the U.S. with a heavy prologue and epilogue, and animated subtitles that alternately scuttle across the screen, dissolve, shudder, and explode. 20th Century Fox not only purchased United States distribution rights for the film, but also announced plans for a Westernized remake. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Complex Supernatural Thriller - Highly Recommended!

Night Watch is a surprisingly good Russian supernatural thriller that is only just short of a modern cinematic masterpiece. No plot spoilers from me; the movie follows Anton, an agent of the "Night Watch", who keeps an eye on Dark Forces and protects a 1000 year old truce. There is a "vortex" forming in Moscow that heralds the restarting of the war between Light and Dark and Anton is assigned to find the cause. Along the way, we see that there is another reality that sort of runs concurrently with ours and it is filled with people who have special abilities (vampires, witches, fortune tellers, etc) and who have chosen a side, either Light or Dark. The plot is solid and there are a few really good twists that makes this so much better than the standard horror flick.

The acting is very good, but the dialog is in Russian with subtitles in English. I understand that the theatrical release had much better subtitles that were actually like a part of the movie, but the ones on this version were perfectly serviceable. Where this movie really excels is in the creative use of special effects, which are often subtle and not over done, and in the often inspired cinematography.

WHERE ARE THE ANIMATED SUBTITLES ON BLU RAY!!!

Movie- 5 stars

The only reason I'm giving this a three is because the Blu Ray does not come with the animated subtitles. The subtitles on the DVD added such a great element to the film! I miss them oh so much and am quite upset that the Blu Ray does not utilize them!

Simply Complex on BD

It seems hard to follow but it's not; and it's a lot of fun. Creative style takes lead with story close at hand. BDs make films more involving and after loving and forgetting the DVD, the Blu-ray got me! Even though the animated subtitles are gone...as in NOT THERE. Don't look. Just enjoy the A/V of the BD. The expressive subs are on a DVD version, save it.

Light + Dark = Grey...
Added 6/7/2009

NIGHT WATCH is not just another simple "good vs. eeevil" story. It is the battle of light and darkness within the realm of grey reality. A reality where no one is 100% pure and nothing is perfectly righteous. A world of omens, curses, prophecies, and a coming messiah. A planet in balance due to the inability of light and darkness to annihilate each other. In this first film, the powers-that-be must bring an ancient prophecy to its history-altering fulfillment. The delicate balance is about to tip in one direction or the other. The centuries-old truce may be lost. Which side will gain the advantage? What will become of those of us caught in the middle? We'll have to see the entire trilogy to find out! NIGHT WATCH is every bit as grand as THE MATRIX was. I only hope that the next installments don't suffer from the same flatness and redundancy that killed that trilogy...

Must Watch Movie

This was a very well put together Russian film. I like how they brought in Russian culture and also made the film appealing to American audiences as well. Can't wait for the 3rd and 4th films!
