Plot: A woman discovers that a part of her family history may be more complicated -- and more famous -- than she ever imagined in this comedy. Thirtysomething Sarah Huttinger (Jennifer Aniston), who has spent most of her adult life in New York City, is flying home to California with her long time boyfriend, Jeff Daly (Mark Ruffalo), for the wedding of her annoyingly perky younger sister, Annie (Mena Suvari). While Sarah and Jeff have recently announced they're engaged to be married, Sarah has been having second thoughts, and she isn't excited about the prospect of spending time with the family where she's always felt like the odd duck. As Sarah tries to decide what she should do with her personal and professional lives, she turns to her sharp-tongued and still youthful grandmother, Katharine (Shirley MacLaine), for advice, and Katharine shares a little-known bit of family history -- that Sarah's now-deceased mother left her father, Earl (Richard Jenkins), a few days before their wedding and ran off with another man for several days before coming back and marrying Earl. However, after hearing this Sarah is also treated to some long-simmering local gossip about a young man who ran off with a bride-to-be after he was seduced by her mother...and that the story became the basis for the hit movie The Graduate. Sarah begins to wonder, was Katharine the real-life Mrs. Robinson of this story? And if it's true, who was the man who had affairs with Sarah's mother and grandmother? Was it dashing and wealthy family friend Beau Burroughs (Kevin Costner), who has also turned Sarah's head? Rumor Has It... was produced from an original screenplay by Ted Griffin; Griffin was originally set to direct the film, but shortly after production began he was replaced, with Rob Reiner taking over the project. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

All the pieces are perfect, including the annoying ones

I saw a small bit of this on TV where Jennifer Aniston and Kevin Costner shined, and ordered it on a whim to see the rest.

I cannot understand all the low ratings. There are certainly parts of the movie that are trite and annoying, but that is real life and the movie should get extra credit for reminding you of your crazy annoying relatives, not be penalized.

A clear sequel to The Graduate (40th Anniversary Collector's Edition), one which could have been called "The Graduate: Next Generation," the story line, the script, the world-class actors in low-key supporting roles, the settings, all of this makes this a very fine "background movie" (what I screen when doing tedious but necessary things like printing address labels) and I loved it.

I would definitely be interested in Graduate Part IV, where she gets divorced, comes back to Costner, and they live a life of sheer joy--Hannibal (book version vice Hannibal (Two-Disc Special Edition) DVD version).

Rumor Has It....

I agree that Jennifer is not a very good actress. When there needs to be softness, she is still harsh, blunt, and to the point. I think the movie, overall, was a funny and cute movie. But Mark Ruffalo (who I usually like) and Jennifer Aniston were #1 not a good match and #2 acted poorly in this film.

Entertaining

Rumor Has It was quite entertaining! Both my wife and I enjoyed it. It starts with an original idea (A man romantically envolved with three generations of women in the same family.) The youngest of these women is not sure who she is and if she is, in fact, her current father's daughter. Although she is engaged to a man who loves her, she is very confused and feels the need to learn the truth and so, goes searching for answers. The story was believable and there were enough twists and turns to keep the viewer's interest. This was a movie which could make you think a bit, make you laugh and even, at the end, bring a tear to your eye as you identify with a person's fruitful search for self-discovery.
Above all, it was entertaining!

Much better than expected

This is far funnier than the typical romance-comedy. Aniston plays her stereotypical female in crisis role. Costner and MacLaine added more laughs. You may know the plot but it's still so funny. I highly enjoyed this flick.
