Plot: Nancy Meyers' romantic comedy Holiday stars Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet as two women who exchange houses in order to get a new lease on life. After each suffers her fair share of romantic disappointments, Englishwoman Iris (Winslet) and L.A. woman Amanda (Diaz) meet on-line at a website devoted to helping people exchange houses for vacations. Each agrees to spend the Christmas holiday at the other's home. While each suffers from a minor case of culture shock, both women also end up becoming involved with a man. Iris makes the acquaintance of an upbeat everyman played by Jack Black, while Amanda spends time with a handsome Brit played by Jude Law. Both women must decide what to do with these new relationships as their pre-arranged house switch is scheduled to last less than two weeks. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

New holiday "classic"?
Added 2/1/2010

I don't like chick flicks, so when this was in theaters I avoided it like the plague, but one day I caught a bit of it on cable and found it fun- light, silly, warm and wonderful. In short, a perfect holiday movie.

In terms of a plot, there's not much there- two women find themselves flailing during the holidays and swap homes in hope of a bit of a change of scene and a break from the crazy. Jack Black is surprisingly honest and likable as Miles the composer. Kate Winslet is, in my opinion, a truly versatile actress who brings a light touch to her role as Iris- an Everygal with guy issues- who Winslet makes so charming and appealing you really wish you knew her in real life. Better yet, when she finally womans up you're rooting for her rather than rolling your eyes and saying "FINALLY!" Cameron Diaz is fun as always- once again proving that her comedic instincts are spot on. I think she worked well with Jude Law, who is just fantastic as Graham- sweet, sensitive and beguiling, and if you can resist those eyes you've got to be made of stone.

There are a few bits that are a little too reminiscent of the talky 70's movies in which characters angst and moan about relationships and drek (there's a scene with Law and Diaz talking about their relationship in bed after sex that made me want to poke my eye out with a fork) but overall it's great fun. I plan on keeping it packed away with my Christmas stuff and bringing it out next Dec. 1 when I'm in need of a little rom com fun and Christmas cheer.

i absolutely fell in love with this bit of cinema fluff. over new years, my son and his girl friend were here. she and i wanted to watch it. he pronounced, after watching for 30 minutes, that he thought he was deveoping ovaries. and that came from an M.D.

My Favorite Rom-Com

I left the UK to move to L.A. several years ago, so I may be biased about my like of this movie. I saw it in the theater when it first came out. It's a charming film--with clever writing and lovable characters--that leaves you warm and fuzzy at the end. Eli Wallach celebrated his 90th birthday during the making of this film. He's a jewel, and his relationship with Kate Winslet's character is just marvelous. Loved all four of the main characters to pieces. I watch it every year now at Christmas.
