Plot: E.B. White's classic children's story comes to the screen in this live-action adaptation with an all-star voice cast. Fern Arable (Dakota Fanning) is a young girl growing up on her family's farm. When a sow gives birth to some piglets, Fern's father (Kevin Anderson) intends to do away with the runt of litter, but Fern has become attached to the little pig and persuades her father to let him live. The pig, named Wilbur (voice of Dominic Scott Kay), becomes Fern's pet, but when he grows larger, he's put in the care of Homer Zuckerman (Gary Basaraba), a farmer down the road. Fern is still able to visit Wilbur regularly, and it soon occurs to both of them that pigs tend to have a limited life expectancy on a farm, and that unless something unusual happens, Wilbur will eventually becomes someone's dinner. Charlotte, a friendly spider, hatches a plan to make Wilbur seem special enough to save by weaving messages about the terrific pig into her web, and she soon persuades her barnyard friends to join in her plan. Charlotte is voiced by Julia Roberts, while the other actors who provide the voices of the animals on Zuckerman's farm include Robert Redford, John Cleese, Oprah Winfrey, Steve Buscemi, Kathy Bates, Cedric the Entertainer. Thomas Haden Church, and André Benjamin. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Wonderful!
Added 10/21/2009

I thought this live action version was wonderful! I love, love, love the cartoon/book and yet also really liked this movie version. The voice actors did a great job, however, Charlotte's voice (Julia Robert's) fell a little flat. I think a better actress would have been Christine Lahti. Julia Robert's voice lacked the motherly, loving emotions that were portrayed better in the cartoon. Anyway, that was minor. I was weary to watch this movie because I just hated the remake of "Charlie and Chocolate" factory because of it's total lack of innocence and child wonderment. This movie, however, portrayed the beauty of friendship, childhood innocence, love for another beautifully. Of course, I still love the cartoon the most! I cried reading the book, watching the cartoon, and this movie.

Stupendous story for young and old!

This is one of the most delightful stories I have ever seen on DVD. I loved each character, and there are plenty of them. I especially liked that it was not a cartoon. This is a "must see" for families who just enjoy some time of good clean fun. There is laughter, silliness (in the crows) and just plain good watching during the entire story! I highly recommend it to young and old alike!

A movie that actually does justice to the book

1. As many folks, I grew up reading and loving Charlotte's Web.

2. As with most movies based on books, I was doubtful that this movie would live up to the book. But this movie is about as good as you can get in regards to an adaptation based on a book. Great acting, obviously great storyline, and the modern twist of having the animals talk is one of the "improvements" that a movie can bring to the table.

3. Highly recommended to all.
